Check dams are providing us with that very rare element water while simultaneously rejuvenation our ecology. They are giving us pure chemical free water distilled from heaven. The clouds shower their bounty upon the land and we take what is required for our use and livelihood. The rest is used to quench the thirst of Mother Earth who has been parched and thirsty for 200 years ever since we started plundering the planet is the name of development.

Security against drought & floods

Check dams safeguard the area from drought as well as floods at the same time. A single rain at the beginning of the monsoon season will not assure even a good kharif crop but if a check dam is there, that rain will be held by the check dam which will in turn recharge all the bores & wells in the vicinity, thus ensuring a hassle-free Kharif and hope for a reasonable Rabi even in scarce monsoon rains.

  1. Wells falling below the structure get replenished in no time by the natural capillary action of the soil. All hand pumps, bore wells etc. in the vicinity are recharged. During the monsoon, when the check dam over flows, the level of water in the well comes up to the brim of the well. and remains there for the farmers to utilize for the winter crop.

  2. With the availability of Water the farmer quickly develops additional acres of land and takes them under cultivation for the winter crop. Thus, where only 2% of the land was ploughed now 98% of the land comes under irrigated cultivation. Most farmers take two crops, while some even take a third crop of vegetables.

  3. The wells are situated in the middle of the farm land and have pumps fitted on them. As the level of water is now high consumption of diesel goes down. they can now operate the pumps 24 hours of the day if need be. They are able to sell their water to neighboring farmers.

  4. Migrant labor returns. Reverse exodus from urban areas takes place. The youth and able bodied come back to their homes to lead a life of dignity instead of living on footpaths and shanties in cities.

  5. Women no longer need to go through the drudgery of carrying pitchers full of water over long distances for household use which would take a tremendous toll of their health and physical wellbeing.

  6. The female child now goes to school as the mother is there to take care of household chores.

  7. Come harvest, there is an exponential jump in the income.

  8. Where the villager could not afford one bullock to plough his fields, he now has eight to nine buffaloes and cows tied to his door step. Animal husbandry thus becomes a huge source of income. They have enough fodder for their own use and can sell surplus fodder to others.

  9. Prosperity reaches new heights as every person in the village benefits, and each village now boasts of 4 to 5 tractors and at least 2 two-wheelers in every home.

  10. Weddings and family functions now happen with pomp and festivity.

  11. Environment is restored and ecology rejuvenated. As the site matures under ground rivers start flowing which in turn give rise to springs along the course of the down-flow, giving rise to perennial streams and rivulets down hill.

  12. Health and hygiene improves. The children no longer are malnourished.

  13. The community becomes debt free in a couple of years.

  14. In a nut shell joy, exuberance and dignity returns to the village and the population no longer lives below the poverty line.

  15. Check dams have all the advantages of large dams with none of the disadvantages -- like water logging or displacement of the populace. New inventions will soon be there in the arena where-by small hydro plants will be put the check dams to provide hydro electric power to a cluster of villages
